Pre-Gaming

Pre-Nationals meal...Pasta with Pesto Sauce, some broccoli, and a nice piece of salmon. Tasty.

I fly out in the morning for my first natties. This was my goal since the start of club and it is finally happening. It looked bleak when I broke my foot but I'm back and feeling good. I'll try to update anyone who wants to listen. I'll twitter and facebook. Laters

Regionals Day 2...

Day two of regionals was at another location than Saturday and the fields were worse. There were ankle breaking holes everywhere. But that didn't matter because we came focused and ready to claim a spot to nationals.

First game was against Bravo in the semis. We expected to see them in the finals but after our stumble on day one we had them in the semis. It was warmer on Sunday and even at 9 am you were already sweating. We came out on O and over shot two wide open hucks and they broke to start the game. Our offense was turning it but would continue to get it back and prevent the break. Bravo too half 8-7 being up one break.

At half we talked about staying on our man and not poaching their break throws. We were able to trade some more in the first half but they eventually get a few more breaks and we end up losing 15-12. In this game Billings went down with a Calvin Johnson type move. He went up and caught it in the end zone but lost it when he hit the ground and twisted his knee. He sat out the next two games but played in the game to go.

Next game was against Inception, they had trouble moving it up field and didn't have the throws to really challenge us deep. We win 15-2.

Time to take on 405 again who just beat Sprawl in a tight game I hear. They gave us quite a game the day before but this time our season was on the line so we were going to come out ready. We capitalize early on a turn from their handlers and never look back. They run mostly a UCLA type offense with everything running through the handlers. We were able to make things tough on them and walk away with the game 15-6 maybe.

Finally we had to play Condors for the game to go. I think we all expected to be in this game but to get there a different way. But either way it didn't matter we were in a game and it was time to battle. We knew their defense was playing well and our offense was struggling all weekend but we know were a better team and we need to just play our game.

Nothing special happens the first few points we trade to 4's maybe, then we get a break. Our hucks are offline and not connecting and they get a break or two. We break back to take half 8-7 on serve. Feel good coming out of half but the condors go on a run. They score on offense then break us twice to take a 9-8 lead. Again our hucks are not connecting and they go up 11-9. Then 13-10 game to 15. Our backs are against the wall and things don't look good.

We call a timeout and say that we need to apply pressure and make them earn it. That we can still win this game. So we put it in on offense then put on a thug D line. They work it up and throw a goal to Jeff over wormser, 14-11. But Allen calls a travel that the Observer up holds and two throws later Gill gets a handblock and we put it in 13-12. Next Forge gets a deep D and again we convert to make it 13's. Now you can really feel that the Condors are playing tentative, trying not to lose rather than trying to Win.

Next point they punch it in and our offense holds up to tie it at 14's. There was a question of caps that went on and it was decided that it was over time or something but either way the Condors scored on O to make it 15-14 but it was the first to 16. Our O holds up again and it's 15's game to 16, double game point. Winner goes to Nationals. We pull the disc they get they center the disc, they get an under cut where Allen lays out and almost gets it, the guy gets up and tries to throw a quick dump pass. Wormser gets a poach hand block and the disc hits the turf. The guy calls foul, not sure why or on what but he changes his story a few times. Observer says no foul and we get the disc at about the brick, just 25 yards or so from the endzone. Dollar to wormser in the back corner and we've punched our ticket.

It was a great feeling to finally qualify for the show, especially after coming back from such a deficit. I didn't play great in the Condor game, I kept getting matched up on Bacon and he beat me deep twice. It's just made me work harder these last few weeks to get faster and ready for natties.

NATIONALS!

Regionals

My first SW Regionals in 2 years. When looking at the lack of depth in the SW region it makes the NW's number of teams and talent even more impressive. Going in it looked like only Bravo, Condors, and Streetgang could compete for the two bids to nationals. With Bravo and Streetgang being the clear favorites and Condors being a team you'd have to worry about.

Saturday

Saturday started out nice but progressivly got hotter throughout the day. It was easily in the mid 80's by the final round. The format was a bit screwy with 11 teams. So our pool had 6 teams which meat 5 games day one while each game was to be played to 11.

First game was against Sinergy, a Las Vegas team that basically showed up at game time. We rolled through them no problem with a score of 11-3. Overall we were pretty sloppy though.

Next was 405, an LA team comprised of alot of Irvine guys and and some UCLA. We shot ourselves in the foot by going down 3-0, three strait breaks to start the game. And with a game to 11 that meant had to get moving ASAP. It didn't help that on our first D point we had a miscommunication and leaving a wide open deep huck. We go down 4-1. They were constantly working to break the mark and move it through the handlers and they were coming up with some big catches and plays to put the pressure on us. We got a few breaks back and pulled it to 9-8 i believe. Offense finally started flowing and we traded to 10's game to 12. We came down with an aggressive D and got the turn and the break making it 11-10, they score tieing it at 11's. Universe point and were being pulled to. Our offense works it in with no real problems and we pull it out. But again, another sloppy game for us. It was easy to see that we were going to see everyones best game.

Next was Monsoon, an Arizona team I believe. They had trouble getting the disc up field against our D and we were able to finish this game quickly. 11-2

Full Boar Burbank is mostly High School kids with some old guys. One guy had a big sky high hammer that he threw several times, completing one of them.

Next we had Condors. A game we knew they would be amped for since we took care of them at sectionals. They looked to be resting their stars until the final round against us. This game we had Observers by request of the condors from what I hear.

We start slow again getting broken to start the game and then having a turnover fest on point two until we punch it in. We came down in a zone for the first few D points since it worked well at sectionals but this day was less effective. they get another break and take half at 6-4. In the second half we stick with our zone defenses but they weren't getting the D's we needed, we get 2 breaks or so but they break our offense a few more times as well and the game is at 10-8. We throw away the first throw on the goal line and they punch it in for the 11-8 win.

After the game we stretched and tried to quickly put that game behind us knowing that it didn't end our season. We noted a few things we needed to adjust for tomorrow and it really just made it so we saw Bravo in the semi's instead of the finals. So we got some food and headed back to Oxnard to the hotels for some college football and sleep.

Sorry if the details are a bit vague but I don't recall every detail. I'll post Sundays write up later. Pictures to come as well.

Back to writing

I've been MIA for awhile but I'm going to get back up and writting the mindless dribble that all 5 of you are accustomed to.

Congrats to the Polar Bears for qualifying for the show. Now I have to make sure we qualify this weekend inorder to make my decision to not play with them a decent one. Time to carbo load!

Sunny San Diego!

I've finally made the move back to San Diego! I always regretted leaving San Diego for Sacramento, never a good decision. But getting back down here just feels right.

I will miss most of the Davis guys as well as the Bay Area friends I've made these last two years while living up North but I know I'll see them again.

It's a new chapter in my life and I plan to take a lot of time to figure out what I want to do in it. Since my new job isn't super demanding right now I hope I'll be able to really get some things figured out.

Anyways come down and visit me ASAP! We can cuddle!

The Day the World Changed

A paper I had to write about my self back in school. This is for an upper division Management class I had to take in order to graduate. Basically I had to write a 2 page quick autobiography, so I had some fun with it. I did go to a state school so what can I say.

The Day the World Changed

The world changed forever on January 25th, 1986. I like to think that the world became a brighter, livelier, and happier world on that date because I, William John Griffin, came to be. I was born in Panorama City Ca to Bill and Debbie Griffin. I was the first of three children in the new Griffin family so I had to become that shining example for my younger siblings, and boy did I shine. We lived in Palmdale CA for the first seven years of my life until my father's job forced us to move up north to the quaint village of Vacaville CA. I enjoyed a good life in "cow town", (as the locals often referred to it as), it was a very peaceful town with good schools and good people. I met plenty of people and peers that would become lifelong friends.

In Vacaville I was very active within my community and was often seen at annual Christmas Tree Lightings, carnivals, taking part in Little League, youth soccer, and the Boy Scouts of America. When I became older and went to the famous Vacaville High School i joined the Ultimate Frisbee Club, Student Council, Link Crew, and an anti-drug organization. I grew to an age where it was appropriate to obtain a job and began working at the local In-n-Out Burger and made enough to purchase a small truck. I had a car, a girlfriend, and was about to graduate from high school everything was going well in my life. Then things continued to go well and didn't falter.

I would say the greatest memory and memories that I have come from my summers working at a Boy Scout Summer Camp called Camp Winton. I started as a counselor in training and worked my way up to assistant camp director. Throughout my 8 years on staff I grew up tremendously and can honestly say that I would not be the person I am today without my years as a camp counselor. During my years there I went on camp outs, played capture the flag, went star gazing, cooked cobblers, washed dishes, swam polar bear, fought 2 forest fires, searched for lost scouts, sang songs, acted in skits, flipped burgers, drove motor boats, water skied, snorkeled, rock climbed, danced around a fire dressed in Native American regalia, and much much more.

After two years at a local community college I transferred here to SDSU and I am majoring in Business Management. I am the captain of the Ultimate Frisbee Team, I have met plenty of friend, a girlfriend, and becoming involved in more campus activities. I am enjoying my time here in Southern California and look forward to the future. I feel that everything that I have done in my life so far has just been to prepare me for what I will do next. I don't know that that next thing is but it feels like everything builds upon the next thing and continues to make me a stronger, smarter, and overall better person. I am looking forward to the future.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Looks like I didn't know what I was talking about but I did get a 100% on this paper, if you can call it a paper.
Injuries
I'm six weeks into my broken foot injury and it still sucks. I broke my 5th metatarsal six weeks ago at SB Classic. I wasn't playing when it happened I was actually at the beach and decided to run into the water to push someone in and slipped on a rock. Boom broken.
It was dishartening because I was really getting into a rhythum in ultimate and in life in general. Then I break it and now I can barely get myself a bowl of ceral. I let too much milk go spoiled. :(
The treatment called for 4 weeks in a not weight bearing cast then 4 weeks in a walking boot. If everything looks good after that then it's a slow ramping up of hard contact. Which would put me back at 100%, (if everything goes to plan) around the end of August. That sounds good to me as it should get me back right before the series.
Well I spent the 4 weeks in the cast and crutchs and now I'm at week one of my 4 weeks of a walking cast, 2 of which will be in a hard fiberglass cast. I go back in on the 21st and hopefully they will put me into a soft walking removable boot. Then I can take a shower without that annoying removable boot.
Anyways mentally I'm better now that I can walk. But when I couldn't walk I was constantly annoyed and hating life. I guess anyone who would be in that situation would feel the same. But now since I'm about halfway through my recovery its all down hill. And with my potential new job / move I am in an even better mood, but that is for another post.
Anyways don't break your foot!
Potlatch!
As always on the 4th of July weekend I head up to Seattle to partake in one of the most enjoyable Ultimate Tournaments around, Potlatch. This is a great tournament with 100ish teams with lots of competition, tons of spirt, costumes, games, and adult beverages.
This tourney is even more special to mee because it is where I met my girl. Two years ago we met playing on the same team. Who would have known that we would still be together two years later at our third Potlatch.
This year I couldn't play but I did win the MVP of the Showcase game by catching a huck in my rented Rascal Scooter! Solid. Also had some awesome heckles and a solid costume made it all worth while. Hopefully next year I can play.
The Least Interesting Man in the World
That's right, it's time for the next lowly-anticipated installment of Will-Ographies.
This time the information was a bit harder to come by as Eric Halverson's defenses are nearly impossible to penetrate. He is like a rubics cube you can't solve, a fortune cookie you cannot open, he is the sister's diary you just can't unlock. He is...The Least Interesting Man in the World!
His cereal never gets soggy, because he eats it so before it does.
When the Police pull him over, they talk to the passenger.
When he walks, he puts one foot in front of the other.
His Organ Donor card also lists his beard.
He doesn’t believe in using oven mitts, he prefers potholders.
His shirts are never wrinkled.
He is right handed.
He once received an extra taco by mistake at a drive thru, and didn't tell a soul.
He mysteriously goes missing, later it is discovered he was grocery shopping.
He has never been known to rock the casbas.
He has never lost a sock.
He can't speak French, in Russian…
He will never be tan.
He has a tailor made hospital gown, in case he ever needs to see a doctor.
His morning breath smells like fresh mint.
He never pays to much money for something, it's always him who rips them off.
He is the Least Interesting Man in the World.
Coming Soon...
I feel my blog needs to bring more to the world. For too long it has been a container for useless drival, mostly about ultimate ramblings, fortune cookie nonsense, and weekend updates that are as satisfying as Saturday Night Live's. There are nearly ten people who flock to this publication to devour the slop that I post, I suppose some people just need their thrill...I mean fill. Sorry my back space button is broken.
So announcing the beginning of a new series. Will-Ographies. That is right. I will be writing others biographies with the "Will" influence. I can't describe what that is but it will be good, trust me. Think of them has human intrest pieces. Besides I'll write them while I'm at work and that's when I'm most creative.
The first Thrill-Ography is in the works, but here is the teaser...
Who is Kevin Cissna?
Many have asked this question but few have recieved the answer that they expect. When I asked the question the most common answer I received was that Kevin is actually the 4th Stooge. Yeah that's right, there were 4 but Kevin's "Dead Pan" style didn't gel with Curly. Plus he hates curly hair people. Plus he's not funny.
The weirdest answer I recieved was that he was in fact not real. I was told that Kevin was created by the writers of the Fox Television Series Lost, they wrote the character for the series until Kevin actually came out of the paper they were writing on and said "Lost Sucks! What is a 'Smoke Monster'? Do you think before you write stuff? You're a bunch of pussies!" Then he left by slamming the door open.
I've also heard that Cissna is a mystical beast created from the gods to reign terror upon the weak, uncordinated, and leftys. His Wii Bowling skills are matched only by the his skills at whipping up a mean bowl of Cherrios. Then I told Kevin to shut up because that doesn't make sense.
Kevin - "I was sculpted by the hands of Zeus!"
Will - "So Zeus had his hands all over you?"
Kevin - "No, well yes, but not... He was sculpting, it's not gay"
Will - "I didn't say it was"
Kevin - "You were implying"
Will - "Well, do you normally let men put there hands all over you"
Kevin - "I love the fine arts"
Will - "Well did he sculpt... 'All of you'?"
Kevin - "Hell yes, I have a Zeus sculpted Ass"
Will - "It is nice"
More to come...
Maybe...
Weekend Update
YEAH MUFF!
Tryouts
Revolver tryouts tomorrow. Should be sweet I love tryouts. Everyone trying so hard trying to play perfect but not holding anything back. Not sure what to expect except seeing people pushing them selves hard. I had about 3-4 days off when Christina came up so I feel a little behind physically but I know wants I get warmed up I'll be ready to go.
Work
Theres about 2 weeks left until our sales conference in Dallas that I have been planning. Things are getting tight as we still have a few things to finalize. But overall it should go well, hopefully I look good and can move out of this department come next month. Fingers crossed.
Tahoe
Went snowboarding last weekend and I did really well even though I hadn't snowboarded in 2 years or so. I think it's because I watched so much of the Winter Olympics. I must have picked up on something up. Lindsey Von aint got nothin on me.
Health Care
It passed. Just thought you should know. I mostly like to read the arguments against it, most people seem pretty certain the world is ending. I hope so I hate this place. I've come to the conlusion that not very many sane people comment on articles or shitty blogs for that matter. :)
Question
How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop? Answer: 7. How do I know this? Well it involves toothpaste, chicken wire, and I'm really not allowed in Marine World any more.
Anyways good luck tomorrow, play like you have a big dick.
What is your Fortune?
Over my many years traveling I have come across a plethora of eating establishments. And some of these establishments contain powerful pieces of wisdom that barely effect your life. They arrive with your meal, most often at the end or in a big bowl by the cash register. These knowledge nuggets can give you something meaningful to walk away with other than just a full tummy.
Often and only in cookie form the elusive Fortune Cookie has steered many people to prosperity as well as failure, mostly unrelated to what the fortune actually beholds. Also many people have passed the time by altering the fortunes meaning by adding the phrase "in bed!" to the end of it, although mostly frowned upon these teenage youngsters prosper in there snickering using this method.
Again among my many travels I have found the most powerful of fortune cookie proverbs and I'm ready to share these wisdom wig nuts with you. Take them as you will but these fortunes have literally done nothing in my life to help me prosper, if anything they have caused me to be more distracted at work while I write this meaningless blog post regarding them. These are actual fortunes I've recieved. So enjoy...
"Now is a good time for you to explore. Take a Vacation"
"Your financial life will be secure and beneficial"
"Life is not a struggle, it is a wiggle"
"Look behind you"
"Yes, that top does make you look fat"
"You will have gold pieces by the bushel"
Can't decide if it has been a good offseason or a bad one.
As I said from an earlier post,
My inadequacy keeps me up at night...
Better hit the gym...sad face:(
Upcoming Schedule...
I have a busy couple of weekends coming up, which is exciting and stressful since I'll be busy but also I will get little relax and down time. But maybe I'll just use work hours for that. Here is what's coming down the pipe.
Saturday 3/13 - Davis Practice / Scrimmaging the Dogz
Sunday 3/14 - Spring Fling Tourney in San Jose
Sat & Sun 3/20-21st -Skiing in Tahoe - the girl will be here as well
Saturday 3/27 - Revolver Open Try Out
Sat & Sun - 4/3 - 4th - DUI
Saturday - 4/10 - Fools Fest in Santa Cruz
Sunday - 4/11 - Maybe second day of Fools or flying to Dallas for work conference
Sat & Sun 4/17-18th - Bay Area Sectionals
Busy few weekends but again it should be fun and hey at least I'm out of the house.
PS. So I'm going to try to add a few more pictures to my posts. Here is my first shot.
Took these picture on the freeway in front of my house. Don't know why but it cracks me up. Ahh Sacramento...
Did I just lower the class of my Blog?
Weekend Update
Apparently I only ever post on Fridays...
Hamstring
Tweaked my Hamstring last week at practice. Just wasn't warm enough as I took off into a sprint. It got tight I went down. It feels alot better today as I have been taking it easy. I have started to ramp things back up and it feels ok. I haven't done anything super explosive but I've probably got up to 80% and have felt ok. I really just need to focus on getting it warm and keeping it warm, then I think I'll be fine.
Stanford
The Dogs went to the Stanford Open last weekend and played pretty well. We still have to shore up our defense, we did not look strong at times and had several mental lapses. There was an outside shot that we would make the Invite as the third place team since Squids and Ugmo were thinking of not going. But in the end Cal decided to attend so we get to sit and watch and all we have left before sectionals is DUI. Time to get to work.
Kevin and I took a 5 hour energy on Sunday, we coached so well.
Crossfit
Did my first Crossfit oriented work out yesterday.
25 Squats (no weight)
25 Sit ups
25 Push ups
25 Pull ups
50 Squats
50 Sit ups
50 Push ups
50 Pull ups
75 Squats
75 Sit ups
75 Push ups
75 Pull ups
Do the entire circuit and time yourself.
I was reading the post and the shortest time I saw was 23 minutes or so. I was at 30 mins and I could only get through half of the pull ups and push ups on the last set. I had to finish off with some chest presses for push ups, and then assisted pull ups with weight counters.
Overall it felt good though. Instead of wondering around looking for my next set I knew what was next and I hustled to it so I could get the best time. I was surprised at how much I was sweating while doing the pull ups. I'm going to try and continue to get these crossfit work outs in between my normal routine. Feels good. Ben I'm winning.
Girlfriend
I'm going to see her this weekend at the Stanford Invite. Her team is going down there to dominate so we'll see how it goes. But we should get some ample time to hang out Saturday night. Which is good because we haven't had tons of time alone together in awhile.
Club
Is turning out to be interesting here in these early stages. Looks like Jam is no more. And Revolver has beefed up even more so. There may not be alot of room for me at the big boy table but I will give it my all and make it a tough decision to not have me on the team. If I don't make it then we'll see where I go. SD team, Rev B, or coed (hopefully not). Either way these next few weeks are really going to motivate me to get into great shape and really try to do well at the upcoming tryouts. I love tryouts so much anticipation and angst. Bring it!
Work
Sucks
Lei-Out
Sick video Zip made. I'm not gonna say anything but my lay out at 2:00 is sweet. Plus its like the only one I ever got. Then theres the high release backhand at like 2:45 I think. Felt so good. Props again to Zip. http://vimeo.com/9831097
Who Let the Dogs Out?
This post is nearly a week old and I should have posted about it earlier but, better late then never I suppose.
Last Saturday the Davis Dogs went down to Cal Berkely to scrimmage UGMO, you know? The Dogs were excited about it and were ready to go and give Cal a good game. The previous time we played them was at the Santa Barbara Invite and they pretty much did what ever they wanted as we couldn't contain there offense, and they threw zone on us which was something we had not practiced nearly enough.
So we wanted to go down there and give them a better game, show them that we are talented and that we have improved since last time we met.
We get down there and walking down the tunnel into Memorial Stadium was somewhat surreal. I could imagine Cal Bear Football stars making that same walk and I was getting goosebumps. Anyway we start to play and we weren't going to do anything special, just come out play hard, match up well, and play our game.
The game started out trading the first few points. Our defense was getting some turns but couldn't convert while our offensed worked well, they even threw Zone in the first two points and we were able to handle that well and punch it in. When we got the break we were able to put it in, and then we went on to get two or three more points. We were pressuring their dumps well and they just couldn't complete the passes they needed. We weren't giving the disc back and we take half 8-4 I believe.
At half we discuss not letting up and being able to close teams out in the second half and keeping our intensity up. We come out of half fired up but we again end up trading to bring the score to 11-7. We finally start generating the turns and scoring as we take the game 15-8.
I think it was generally agreed that Cal didn't play their best game while the Dogs played very well. I expect Cal just had a bad day and we'll have a much tougher game against them possibly this weekend and or in the series. Either way the win has given the Dogs tremendous confidence which is good because we are a very good team. I have confidence that they will give it everything they have come this weekend at the Stanford Open (Qualifier).
Some Highlights of the game:
-Playing in Memorial Stadium in front of 50 people or so
-Finding Parking
-Barnes Sky in the back of the endzone followed by a huge spike
-Adam's two hand grab "over" Hagen
-Rob's sick upline catch goal
-Zimmer working so hard but still not get any D's
-Hitting the walk off two run homer in Baseball Pong later that night at Kevin's house.
Weekend Update
Food for thought for the weekend
The New UPA Rankings Are Up!
http://scores.upa.org/scores/#college-open/Rankings
Interesting how the UPA is doing these rankings. They are only ranking teams with at least 5 sanctioned games under there belt. That screws several teams at this points since Vegas was a bust. So obvious teams missing are Florida, Carlton, UBC, Virgina, Oregon, among others. I like the bid allocation presentation. Easy to read and clear, too often we never knew exactly how many bids we were going to get. And of course using the current years results are much more beneficial then using previous years results at nationals. Since the last few years the NW teams do well throughout the season but tank at natties. Currently it says the NW will be getting 4 bids, wow that would be nice. We'll see if that changes at all as the series approaches.
Davis is ranked 5th which seems high based off our current results. But if you add those 5 other teams we may drop 5 or 10 spots. Interesting non the less.
Cal vs. Davis
The Davis Dogs are scrimmaging Cal Ugmo this weekend in Berkeley. I believe we are going to be in memorial stadium. Should be fun. Practice last night was all drills no games. So you know the guys have blue balls and are ready to go out there and play as hard as they can. Should be exciting, I'll try to have a solid wrap up after this weekend as well as any pictures. Maybe some video.
Coed Mash up
I have been invited to a coed mixer mash up thing this weekend in Berkeley. On Sunday I'm heading back out to Gilman Fields to play in basically this first crack at putting together a new Bay Area Coed team. I don't really know the talent level in the area when it comes to mixed ultimate so at the very least I'll go out there and have some fun. I'm not really excited to play for a mixed team, but I want to get to nationals this year. And if I can't make a nationals quality open squad (Revolver, Jam, Streetgang) then mixed might be an option.
Crossfit
I have been thinking about starting this Crossfit workout routine. I like that it is mostly movements and short bursts of things, I also like the continued improvement and the competition it instills. It also seems to include alot of coaching both on technique of excercises and nutrition. Both areas I could improve upon and both of which I do not get at 24 hour fitness. There is a gym by my house that I want to jump into but havent found the time to get over there.
I am also looking to join this gym www.fourthpowerfitness.com
FYI...
It's been a few days since my last post so I thought I would just group together some of these thoughts togther since none of them seem to worthy an entire post.
Vegas What shit fest. I mean it was tons of fun walking the strip and loosing money to blackjack dealers and Roulette. But I went there Ultimate! I know that the TDs cannot control the weather but it seems to me that they should have been a bit more prepared knowing that rain was 80% possible. The Field manager shut down the games quick and Cultimate was stuck with there pants down. And normally in Vegas that isn't bad but in this case it was.
Overall I don't expect a refund and I don't expect Vegas to be the large event it has been the last few years. Cultimate will survive but there customers are not happy.
Work I went to a conference board meeting this past week. It was basically individuals from other companies in the same department and positions as myself. So of course it was 80% a snore and 20% good food.
It was ok but mostly talking to other companies about all the problems that we all have and the solutions we have used to solve them. So there were some interesting things that came up but mostly it was business mumbo jumbo. One thing I found interesting was the idea of paying Sales Operations people (me) on a variable scale. So basically my pay would be dependent upon how well (or bad) the sales reps I support do. The idea being that I would have more stake in how well he/she is doing and I can hopefully work to support and enable them better. Interesting idea not sure if I like it or now.
Presidents Day I'm heading down to San Diego this weekend to watch some Ultimate and to see the girls on Valentines Day. It should be fun since were road tripping it down with KC, Cambria, and Matt. Were gonna make the best of it and have fun in the sun.
Break I've been pretty busy these last several weekends, going back to Lei Out weekend I think I've been doing something everyweekend since thing. But after this weekend I'll have a bit of a break and I'll be able to relax a bit.
It goes to 11... So I feel like its time to start ramping up my work outs. I have been staying in pretty good shape with light work outs here and there. But I haven't started to kick my own ass. And I think its time to start doing that. Starting Tuesday, after this weekend, I'm really going to start and get in a rythem so that come March I'm in really good shape and then come April when some of the club try outs begin to pop up I will be in amazing shape. Then I can rape on fools.
Yeah Muff
Vegas Baby!
Heading out to Vegas in a few short hours to coach the Davis Dogs. I wasn't excited about being the only coach heading out there but I've warmed up to the idea. Hopefully I can help guide these dogs to where they should be.
The plan is to kick some ass, gamble all my money away, and simply dominate. We'll see how that works but either way it should be fun.
Besides what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas!...Except for Herpies, that shit will stay with you.
Schedule for this weekend. I'll try to keep people updated.
Curveballs
Can be a deadly weapon for a pitcher. The pitcher works to set you up, maybe throwing you a few fastballs around eye level, or something inside, or just simply trying to blow one by you. Then when you least expect it he strikes!
The ball starts as you would expect it to, spinning fast so that you can only see a white orb coming at you as innocently as can be. But the curveball has no innocents, it is plotting your down fall, plotting to destroy your dignity, and it may very well succeed.
Just as you start your swing on this two face of a pitch the ball breaks downward. If you saw the curve coming then maybe your ready for it, maybe you don't swing and take your shot with the umpire, or maybe you can get the bat squarely on ball and put it in play. Hopefully the pitcher hung it up a bit and this devilish pitch turns into a beach ball and you can turn on it well.
Or maybe it gets you. Maybe a curveball isn't what you expected or wanted right now. It throws you off balance and you become uncomfortable in your stance. Your now desperate, desperate to make things right. So you throw your hands at the ball hoping to just get a piece so you don't have to go back to the dug out in shame. So you don't have to take that slow walk back while the pitcher gets to pad his stats.
Either way you didn't expect it, and if you can fight it off then whose to say a curveball won't come at you again and throw you out of wack once again. The question becomes can you handle the curve? Can you handle a wrench in the gears? Especially when you least expect it.
It is interesting how pitchers hardly throw you that curve when you're expecting it or wehen you're ready for it. But maybe that's what makes things worth while...if all you got were change ups down the middle that could lead to little growth and development as a player and person. How would you ever know how to hit not just the curve but the slider, sinker, fastball, forkball, slurve. And to be successful in this crazy rat race you need to be ready for anything a pitcher throws at you.
I've got a few curves this last week. Not sure if I've fought them off or if I'm waiting for that umpire to ring me up.
Thoughts from Santa Barbara Invite
I thought I would put some thoughts together regarding the Santa Barbara Invite results from this last weekend. I was in attendance last weekend as a coach with UC Davis so perhaps my opinions are a tad bais but probably not by much.
First off the schedule was ridiculous, we played two games early in the day and were done by 1, then we had a 4 hour bye until our game at 520, then the next game at 9:20. Then after our 9:20 game we had an 8 am game.
Anyways my thoughts on the teams I saw...
UCLA: They were the team I expected to see, lots of handler movement and give-gos all day. They went up on us early but we stayed tight on our marks and and started generating turns and evenutally came away with the win 9-6. I think this team is pretty solid but with the offense they run they need solid timing and anticipating from the handlers and cutters. This is probably why they didn't do too well at this early tournament. Initally I would expect them to finish around the back door semis at regionals.
Colorado: Athletically gifted team with height and solid fundamentals all the way around. They liked the side stack with iso cuts and the IO break. We brought the game within 1 or 2 but really didn't play our best game. They didn't seem to have an amazingly dominant player but they did win the tourney so you can't count them out of being a good team.
Arizona: A much younger team then of years past but still very athletic. They liked the deep ball and would at times blindly huck it to someone deep. They are probably a team around the same talent level as UCLA.
Cal: This team is a solid fundamental team. They only try to do a few things and do them well. Mateo can throw what ever he wants and Hagen anchors the deep D and O. Again they are fundamentally sound and really enjoy breaking the mark. They have great role players in James, Gary, and Rhoeder. They're a lot deeper than I expected and I guess it just goes to show that you can't coun't out Nationals experience.
Stanford: They lost a lot of talent from last year and you can see that in their play this year. They have a few talented players but they aren't the dominate team they have been in years past. They do a lot of verical stack with a cut from the front going deep and they like to those big back hand hucks. We were able to match up well and limit the number of hucks they completed. I'm not ready to count them out because they still have a well established program and just like everyone else they will continue to get better. So we'll see how they do come stanford invite.
UC Santa Barbara: They have been declining since my Junior year in college and now I think they are the the least talented Tide team I have ever seen. They just seem deflated from the team they used to be. They aren't very loud or enthusiastic at least not to the level they used to be. They still work hard and run hard but they are young and make typical mistakes. I'm sure they will keep working but I don't seem them in Madison this year.
San Diego State: My Alma Matter. My boys have been running hard from what I hear and they look like they are in pretty good shape. They had a rough weekend partly due to there age (young team), silly drops, and lack of practices prior to this tourney. I still think they will improve especially since Cliffy says they are the best team State has had. I'll be rooting for them and I think they can defeat Squids and Tide this year. But you gotta do it at regionals for it to count.
UW: From what I could tell they didn't have the talent they have had in the past. Not sure if they were missing anyone but they seemed beatable and under staffed. Maybe the travel got to them but it seems that they didn't bring there best game. But hey it's early.
See you at Vegas...all on black!
SDSU Beats Azrizon on Universe...WOW
WOW is right.
This is probably the most memorable game I ever played in. It was 2008 my senior year and captain year at San Diego State. We had just played the three day tournament in Vegas called 'Trouble in Vegas' and we had a decent perfomance. I think overall we came out with a 4-5 record but we felt good about how we played and knew we could make a few adjustments and be a better team.
Arizona had a better vegas. They were relatively unknown and were able to win a few games and ended up in the round of 16 on day two. We had just finished beating Richmond and we went over to watch the end of the Arizona vs. Florida game. I only watched the last 4 points or so but it was worth it. Sunburn and the Gators were in a battle, they were trading points and Joe Kershner was tearing it up. Lopp, they called him, had a big sky over Kurt Gibson and ended the game on a universe layout over Gibson. The sideline was huge and it felt like the entire tournament was watching. Lopp basically won the Callahan award in that game and reallly in that layout universe catch. Arizona would go on to make the finals and lose on time cap to Wisconsin by one point. But again Lopp had a huge layout grab to end the game.
Anyways the very next weekend in San Diego for Presday we take second in our pool to Kansas, a game we could have won, and they win there pool. This matches us up in power pools the next day. First we had to battle to get through Arkansas, which was a game we probably should have lost be we battled back. Next we lost to Tide X. Then we were set to play Arizona. I distinctly remember talking with our coach about wanting to beat UCLA, our opponent in our 4th game. So our focus was not on the Arizona game at all, we did not expect to even be in that game.
So the game starts, I can't remember too many details, but I do remember them turning the disc pretty easily and us being able to score. We didn't do anything special or tricky, we didn't talk much before the game about a strategy we simply played ultimate in a lose fun atmoshpere because we expected to lose. Occasionally we would run our junk D but again we overal strategy. I do remember Wes catching several scores, Wes is a small little Asian guy who is sneaky. We called him cheat codes because he would often times end up catching the disc over someone twice his size.
All of a sudden we are up 6-3 and end up taking half at 7-5 I believe. At this point the game tightened up and both sides put pressure on defense. I covered Lopp mostly in this game and wasn't overly impressed. Don't get me wrong he is a great ultimate player but he didn't hurt us much this game. I think his main strength is his intelligence on the field as well as his athletic ability, but again I didn't find him terribly difficult to contain and I felt someone like Seraf on UCLA was a much tougher assignment for me and I usually stuggled. However I did hear he was recovering from an ankle sprain, but hey I spained mine at Vegas as well.
So the battle continued and we were still up a break or two, some how they got it back and we were neck and neck. It seemed that all our game with Arizona was going running long because other teams had finished there games and came over to watch surprised that we were still playing. The sidelines began to bolster and then your adrenaline starts pumping. The score has to be something like 11 at this point and as were being pulled to the hard cap goes off, universe!
We work it down the field and utilize the center of the field in our spread offense. I remember at one point cutting to the middle of the field and being vastly over throwed, I layed out and couldn't get to it. I thought we had turned it and our shot at completing the upset may have been lost, but Jackson was there to catch the errant throw and we were still in business. We get down to the end zone I get a break throw from the front of the stack and continue the break to someone for the score and the win!! We beat Arizona and completed the upset! Or so I thought...
One of the Arizona captains come over and say that he just talked to the TD and he said that you must win by two in soft cap. We didn't think that was correct but hey he talked to the TD. So we kept playing and Zona scores it to make it 12s I believe. At this point the Hard Cap goes off and were now in universe. As were working it up the field there is a pick call or something and play stops, at this point the TD runs on to the field and says that the game should be over. We should have won the Zona captain was confused and heard wrong. We decide to just play it out, if we were at regionals it might have been a different story.
So again we drive down the field and Grill gets the disc about 30 yards out of the end zone, I'm cutting from the opposite side of the field towards the back cone and Grill puts it. I track it down with a lay out goal and the win! We beat Arizona. It was an epic win and probably is the biggest win that SDSU has had ever. All in all zona was a great opponent and very fun spirited team. They actually crashed at my house for regionals in Arizona and they were a lot of fun.
Some one captured the last point on video, not long but epic.
Happy New Year!
That's right it is 2010 (that's 'twenty-ten' not 'two thousand & ten', no one ever said 'One thousand nine hundred and ninety nine' - get it right)
And since I still haven't had a significant amount of posts on this blog, mostly due to blog writers block, I thought this would be a good topic to spark my thoughts and creativity to help that snowball get rolling.
So first off I have never been a big fan of New Years Resolutions mostly because I forget them pretty quick and what is important to you right now may not be important to you tomorrow I also prefer to enact some sort of change in my behavior rather than try to accomplish a specific goal. For example say your resolution is to quit smoking and say you do that by Feb, now you have 10 more months of nothing to accomplish, or I guess you could just work to continue to not smoke but that seems like a stagnant way of going about it. So I prefer more of a New Month Resolutions or Quarterly Resolutions.
But for the sake of actually completing a post with any logical thought free of irrational rambling and nonsense I will post my New Years Resolutions.
Here they are in no particular order...
Move - That's right, move out of Sacramento. I don't like living here, I don't know too many people and I haven't really set out to try and meet many people mostly because I don't want to get too involved in anything and somehow become stuck. I would love to get back down to San Diego, I really enjoyed it there and I feel that I really am the person I want to be when I'm down there. Or at least can become that person. I would settle for the Bay Area but still not ideal.
New Job - I don't necessarily have to be with a different company but I would prefer to have a different set of responsibilities that I enjoy. Right now I'm in sort of a rut when it comes to work and it has become a "Job", in a sense that it is painful to do the work. I want to enjoy what I do and have a clearer direction in where I am going. Right now I don't have either.
Pay off all Debt - I don't think I can get it all paid off but I certainly can get a large chunk out of the way, having it hang over my head as I go about my every day life is a weight that I can literally feel. I'm not in bad shape at all actually compared to many of my peers and maybe I'm just a bit paranoid but I think that is a good thing. So I would like to have my Truck, School Loans, and Credit Cards significantly paid off by this time 2011.
Qualify for Club Nationals - A lofty goal to set this year but if you don't make that your goal you'll never be disappointed when you don't make it. I simply want to be the type of player that can help a team get there and significantly contribute to the success of the team. We'll see what this year holds and what team / division I will be playing in.
Win the Super Bowl in Madden 10 - I'm 5 or 6 seasons in on franchise mode and I've lost the Super Bowl twice in consecutive years and these last two years I went out in the first round and then finished 3-13. I should have a top pick in this years draft so hopefully I can get a big time running back or defensive guy and make a good run this year. This may sound like a lame goal and I could actually probably accomplish it later tonight if I get some time on the XBox, but yeah you gotta have fun.
Catch a Hand block - nuff said
Develop Better Eating and Exercises Habits - Right now I'm some what streaky. I'll have a good streak of working out regularly and eating well, then I'll fall off the wagon and get a bit lazy. Right now I'm in the lazy portion because it is my off season in a sense. But that shouldn't excuse it. I need to get heading in the right direction again.
Read & Write More - I want to read a bit more this year and really get some more books under my belt. I also want to put my thoughts on paper, electronic or actual, more. I think that will help me start to figure out what I want in this world.
So those are some of my goals / resolutions this year so we'll see where that gets me and maybe in a few months I can give an update on how I'm doing on these.
Will
